Misconceptions of Interfacing a WMS to the ERP Host
by David C. Allais - Chairman PathGuide Technologies, Inc.
When a distributor or retailer considers investing in a warehouse management system (WMS), it's logical to want to purchase the best solution. However, the IT department may hold out for an inferior warehouse system offered by their enterprise resource planning (ERP) provider. Why?
The reason is usually straightforward: the ERP provider, looking for additional revenue, will successfully sow fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD). They will have described difficulties and told horror stories about attempts to utilize an independent WMS. The IT manager worries that he/she will be held accountable for any problems should they choose an independent WMS (or even worse, a total failure might end his career). A further concern with taking on an independent WMS is that additional work would be heaped on the already overburdened IT staff.
Such fears are unfounded, and worse these misconceptions may deter management from choosing the solution that would provide their business with the greatest return on investment. PathGuide and other dedicated WMS providers have proven that off the shelf WMS's work seamlessly with popular ERP systems. For example PathGuide has established interfaces to 16 different host platforms, including systems by Activant, Infor, JD Edwards, Microsoft Dynamics and Oracle.
Boiled down to its essentials, the ERP to WMS interface is as shown below:
The technical details of the interface are driven by what is most suited to the Host ERP System. Techniques may include flat file data transfers, messaging, or direct connection to the Host database.
When a new interface is to be developed, PathGuide undertakes the work and guarantees the result. The man hours required of the client's IT department are minimal. There is never any financial risk on the part of the client company.
